Separating the ladies from the matrons in the runway melange, especially once it hit the racks of the department stores, christian shoes (http://www.luxuryshoesdirect.com/products_all.html), was difficult indeed. The A-line skirts to the knee. The matching shortened jacket. The printed blouse. The sen-sible shoes. Saucy, to say the least, when clinging to the improbable figure of Gisele Bundchen. But underneath the glaring fluorescent lights of the real world, there was little romance to the look. Thickening waistlines, shortening legs, removing any hint of cleavage (toe or otherwise), the look, perhaps, was right at home with polite company. Try finding anyone who fits that description these days. And try finding anyone who wears tweeds at home.
Maybe what everyone needs is a little better Lady role model. Maybe they need to be a bit more specific.
Let's pick a real lady at random: Lady Keith. Her autobiography, "Slim," written with Annette Tapert, sums up a life: "I had been married to the film director Howard Hawks; I had been married to the great literary agent and impresa-rio Leland Hayward; I was now, thanks to my marriage to Sir Kenneth Keith, bearing a title, the Lady Keith. Along the way, I had 'discovered' Lauren Bacall, and Howard Hawks had used my image to create hers in 'To Have and Have Not.' I had made the best-dressed list innumerable times, I had shot with Hemingway, traveled with Capote and been wooed by Gable."
Lady Keith put her look quite simply. "In my day, different meant not having your hair done in a pompadour and adorning it with a snood, or not trying to hide your intelligence behind a sea of frills."
There was one look this season that conveyed a classic intelligence, and there's even a photo of Slim Keith wearing almost the same thing: the beautiful Grecian dresses. They were the best looks of the season, on runways at Sophia Kokosalaki, Donatella Versace, Nicolas Ghesquiere (for Callaghan and Balenciaga), Clements Ribeiro, Olivier They-skens (who is said to be taking over at Givenchy) and Karl Lagerfeld (for Christian Louboutin (http://www.luxuryshoesdirect.com)). No coincidence that these designers are among the greatest working today.
